Charlotte, North Carolina – Latin American Contemporary Art (LaCa) Projects is pleased to present Viajes (Voyages), an exhibition of new work by Vicente Hernández (Cuba). This will be the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
Through all its cardinal points, the paintings of Vicente Hernandez reflect human beings and their surroundings from an optimistic and colloquial point of view, even if they appear absurd, surrealistic or magical. Hernández’s small hometown of Batabanó, where hurricanes arrive punctually, becomes his nucleus and genesis, accompanying him in the many directions his paintings take. With devotion, Hernández has converted this geographical and sentimental place into the main character of his work.
In this manner, without intention, Hernández elevates his geography to imaginary planes, drawing parallels with the history of art and the world. He takes the small town to a singular plane, a fertile terrain where eternal memories of man are nested and developed. The undertone is very real: a seaside town, an island, a continuous movement of coming and going by migrants from everywhere and towards every place, from the beginning of time and forevermore. Always the voyage, which takes you further than you want or can imagine.
In honor of this new series, an opening celebration will take place at LaCa Projects on Thursday, March 22 from 6 – 8 PM.
